Ithaca police officer Christine Barksdale
explains the proper helmet fit and the safety
course to help the students learn and practice
safe bicycling skills.
Students practice watching for traffic as they
leave the driveway, stopping at stop signs, and
using hand signals to make turns.
Students can use
either a bicycle
or a scooter
to nagaivate
the bike safety course.
At the end of the day,
all of the 3rd and 4th
graders gather to watch as
the principal (Intrim
Principal Earlene Carr in
2005) determines the
winner of the mountain
bike.
The Bi-annual 3rd
and 4th Grade
Bike Safety Rodeo
not only has
students watch
videos on bike
safety, but also
includes instruction
by a police officer
and supervised
practice.
Students who return a signed Bike Safety Pledge are
entered in the drawing for a bicycle which has been
donated by
Olver & Associates Insurance in 2003
and 2005.
