Minutes for January 14, 2008, Elementary School Library @ 6:30 p.m.  (Approved with changes 2/11/08)

A. Welcome and Call to Order: Kay Thomas, President
B. Guest Speaker: Shira Adriance, Whole Community Project, Cornell cooperative extension, focusing on child
obesity with emphasis on the community rather than the individual. Looking at community changes starting at the
schools. Project is one year old, emphasizing strategies of healthy eating and actively living. Support community
activities and help them with resources to network and connect with other groups, activities, and funding resources.
Provided flyer about the project and about school gardening.  Project has monthly forums with panel experts on each
topic. Reality Bites is monthly newsletter.  Contact info: Shira Adriance 272-2292 or sma38@cornell.edu or join the

C. Officers Reports:
1. Secretary Report:
Dorothy Debbie/Cathy Nelson – Minutes approved with changes.
2. Treasurer Report: Amy Anderson (not attending; reported via email)
     a. Monthly Financial Report
             (Checking: $20,885.31; Savings: $3,265.90)    {last Jan. 2007= checking & savings $29,055.95}
3. Membership Report: Katrina Overton,
     Members: Lifetime: 51; Five-Year: 72; Annual: 187; Total: 310
4. President's Report:
•  Volunteers Needed for ES (Math) Fun Nights – Jan. & March nights for K-2 and Feb. & Apr. for 3rd & 4th. ES
principal Chris Pettograsso says (via questions submitted by Kay) siblings (age 3 & older) are welcome to eat pizza
and child care, while games will focus on the grade level. Each group has 2 evenings with 4 different age appropriate
math games, held in the cafeteria. Parents should do games with the student, rather than volunteer that night.
Volunteers arrive at 5:30pm, games from 6-7:30pm; pizza & beverages provided. The event is sponsored by the
Elementary School Shared Decision Making Team for the purpose of having an evening event for families.
•  Requests:
  - ES: Science Guest Speakers – Mrs. Henne had CU students from entomology department, we donated $40 for
student transportation.
  - MS: Maureen Trowbridge/Cathlene Hibbard to purchase more large Nystrom maps for 5th grade social studies at
a cost of approx. $300 for 20 more maps.
Motion:  Provide the 5th grade social studies teachers up to $300 towards
the maps requested – PASSED.
 -HS: Field Trip – HS Librarian Patty Heaton & HS Principal Michelle Stone have requested a Senior trip to CU to
study Literary Criticism by a university librarian and tour rare manuscripts with an amount of $313 anticipated as the
cost.
Motion: Provide the HS with up to $350 for HS Senior trip to CU – PASSED.
    
D. Old Business
1. Create A Craft, Dec. 1st - Amy Boardman
– Great attendance, with about a $661.86 profit. Additional supplies
were purchased from JoAnn’s midway through. HS Art Club did ceramic painting again as a fund raiser (for the bi-
annual Italy trip that MS Art teacher Mrs. Iannone coordinates).  Margaret Shackell coordinated volunteers.
2. Chef-Co. Cookie Dough Sale - Anne Drake (not attending) Kay reported that we're not sure we received our
50% profit; we’ll be checking on it.  Final numbers next meeting. Only 4 people didn’t pick up cookie dough, despite
distribution being moved a day later because of the bad weather.
3. Cherrydale Distribution, Nov. 14th – Donna Prybyl and Katrina Overton helped and Katrina wants to help
with improving distribution next year (putting perishable & nonperishable together).
4. Thanksgiving Feast Report – Kay Thomas reported that there were no complaints that the date had been
moved to a Friday. Staff liked the disposable trays.

E. New Business
1. ES Book Fair, Jan. 29th & 30th - Katrina Overton and Kay Thomas
– Signups are going well; still a few slots.
2. Spaghetti Supper, Feb. 1st (5-7pm) - Dorothy Debbie – Anne Miller of King Ferry Hotel will sponsor again.
Students needed to help. Ithaca Bakery expected to donate 20 loaves of bread and Wegmans $25 gift card. LTAPA
will be selling desserts again.  
3. Tubing at Greek Peak, Feb. 9th - Karie Allison and Diane Schafer – Karie reported is will cost $16 per
person for PTSO members and $18 for non-members and we’ll set up tables in the lodge to set up tickets.

Misc.: -Kay reported that at the Dec. BOE meeting, the district had frozen expenditures due to anticipated shortage
in funds.  New Superintendent may attend our Feb. meeting.
-Anne Drake & Wendy Earl will be beginning Prom meetings.

The PTSO offers you many opportunities to become involved.  We welcome your input and support.
