What is Scrip!
Scrip is “substitute money.” These gift cards are used like cash. The Scrip program helps
the PTSO earn revenue from 2-15% of the face value of each card purchased. Scrip cards
can be used for purchases you would make anyway, especially places you shop from
frequently like grocery stores, gas stations, video stores and the movies. Retailers support
and encourage the use of Scrip gift cards. PTSO earnings are used to support PTSO
events and activities throughout the school district.
If this pilot offering is successful, we hope to offer it on a more frequent basis.
Imagine: 1 family order of $500 in Tops gift cards generates $15 for the PTSO. 50 families
ordering that amount generates $750. Imagine all we can do together! Remember, you
receive 100% of what you spend. $500 dollars ordered for your groceries = $500 of gift
cards.
You buy groceries and things you would normally & the PTSO receives money to benefit our
schools!
1) Indicate the number of each gift card(s) to order on the order form
2) Enclose cash or check (payable to the Lansing PTSO)
to any school office. Orders are filled on an ongoing basis with
most orders ready within 1-2 weeks at most!

What is Scrip?
Scrip is a term that means "substitute money".
When you purchase scrip, you are purchasing negotiable gift certificates that are used just
like cash. The scrip is issued by the national and local retailers where many families already
shop. These merchants want to support non profit organizations, and in return ask you to
support them by shopping with scrip at their stores. You can use scrip to purchase everyday
expenses like food, clothing, and other essentials, and with every purchase, you are
earning revenue for the PTSO.
How scrip generates revenue for you.
The Great Lakes Scrip center acts on behalf of churches, schools and other non-profit
organizations to purchase large amounts of scrip from grocery stores, department stores,
and other retailers. Because the scrip is purchased with cash up front, the participating
retailers offer a substantial discount. The PTSO can buy the scrip from Great Lakes Scrip
Center at a discount, and re-sell the certificates to you for full face value. The bulk of the
discount - from two to fifteen percent or more - is retained by the PTSO as revenue.
Scrip is "shopping cart fundraising”.
The reason for the effectiveness of scrip is simple: families generate revenue through
purchases they would make anyway. Groceries, clothing, toys, gifts, even gasoline can be
purchased with scrip. An group of 150 families easily spends between one and two million
dollars per year on food, clothing and other essentials. If these families use scrip for these
purchases, they can raise as much as $40,000 to $80,000 per year for their organization --
without spending an additional penny.
Retailers like Scrip, too.
Families who purchase scrip certificates actively support the retailers who participate in this
program. The reason is simple… they know that buying from a scrip participating retailer
provides a steady source of revenue for their church, school, or non-profit organization.

Where do the scrip certificates come from?
GLSC purchases the certificates directly from the retailers. The certificates we provide to
our customers are the same gift certificates you would buy if you went to the participating
retailer and purchased them yourself
Can I use the scrip certificates anywhere?
Yes, the certificates are accepted at all participating retailer locations.
Does it cost a family anything to participate? Do they have to sell anything?
There are no membership fees or application fees. Your organization families simply pay
your organization face value for the certificates they order. The beauty of the scrip concept
lies in the fact that your organization members raise money for your organization by using
their existing household shopping budget. Some families may enlist relatives, friends and
neighbors to buy scrip. But unlike other fundraising programs, scrip families do not have to
"sell" anything to raise money for their organization.
Can I use scrip to pay department store charge account balances?
A few retailers allow you to pay charge account balances with scrip, but generally speaking,
most do not. GLSC customers can search our online participating retailers list for specific
information on which retailers do and do not accept scrip for charge account balances.
